Part 1
You’re here ’cause you want to be witchy, and I’m here to tell you how it’s possible, even with chronic and mental illness.
Mental Health and Chronic Illness affects a lot of people on Earth. It’s all-inclusive, love; it doesn’t care who you are! It’s gonna bust down your door and destabilize your whole brain with its antics, it doesn’t give a damn. You could be doing great, maybe from the outside looking in, too; but dang is that crystal façade not really the truth, isn’t it?

When the curtains are drawn and you’re in bed, how are you, really?
Breathe. Take a mental inventory of how you are feeling. And be honest with yourself; if you know you can’t make it out of bed today; or if you can, but you don’t think you can handle a shower… It’s okay to just think for a second here. What is and isn’t a thing you can handle? And we don’t even have to be talking direct witchcraft this second (but it is all witchy at the same time). How is it you can take care of you?
Also. Please don’t ever, ever think that you’re crazy, alone, or even just a burden to others. Maybe some people will actually think these things, but those people don’t matter. Find your tribe, find your people. A pet is a people, too. So are plants. Whatever the hell has your energy, whatever the hell you care about, is your energy. Your favorite book, daydreaming of those fictional characters you’d totally be friends with, maybe even a TV show or a stuffed animal. Whatever.
Now how do you do the dang witchy stuff?
You feel sad or lost, you’re in pain, but you don’t want to do nothing. I feel that way a lot. That’s where the basics come in. Going back to basics is good when it comes to low-energy witchcraft. Because at the end of the day, witchcraft is all down to one important basic: intent.
Intent
Intent, your will, is the most crucial part of witchcraft and spellcasting. Intent is what you put behind your actions, however ‘mundane’ these actions may be. Drinking water? Use the water as Worry Water, and transgress the mundane boundary by adding magickal intent. Everything seen as mundane can be magickal when seen through the witchy lens. Adding intent is simple once you know how. It’s as easy as: 1. Knowing what it is you want, and 2. Putting it into clear and specific words that tells the Universe exactly what it is you want to happen. Magick takes the path of least resistance, so that’s why you need to be extremely clear. If you say you want “Energy to get out of bed”, sometimes the universe will only give you enough to get an inch out that bed enough to go the bathroom, so if you want more than that, you have to be extremely clear. And you also have to word your intent as if you already have it, and with a time constraint to show when you’d have it. A clear statement here, would then be: “I’m able to get out of bed today and do the dishes and, (whatever else you’d like to do that day)”.
But how do you use this magickal intent? One way I like to do it on low-energy days is with the element of Air and Water. Air is quick to aid for me, especially because that’s how the element of air is: it’s fast-acting. Water is a tiny bit slower, but I like that it seems to build up and be sustainable, like a true trickling water stream but within. It can be either a small trickle of energy, or it can build up and really become a waterfall of energy bursting forth from the dam that held it.

Using the Elements
How to use the element of Air… simply put, it’s with your breath. You breath in and out calmly, building a focused state where you focus only on your intention. With every exhale, then, you push your intent into the universe, forcing the winds of change in your favor. You do not have to breathe forcefully, but it’s good to be conscious of it. Imagine, then, your breathe becoming the wind outside, bringing change and becoming a fast acting current that carries back only the best for you. With every breath, you add your power to this wind current, and can achieve quicker results. If pain is a constant concern or even brain fog, just do your best to bring back your awareness to your breathing and really putting your intent behind your exhalation. Spellcasting isn’t a race, it’s a journey. It’s more than okay to be slow-paced, here. So be gentle with yourself, alright?

To use the element of Water, as I’ve mentioned you can use a glass or bowl of water as a type of Worry Water. I’ll make a more detailed section of this in a sec, but for now, just know it’s a healing technique used in ritual to help get rid of heavy feelings and burdens you carry mentally. This is not water to consume, if you do use Worry Water, because it will then contain the emotions you carried that were negative. And that would be just silly to put them back where they came from.
Another way to use the element of Water is to enchant a glass of water to then consume, enchanting the water to then bring out it’s healing capabilities, hopefully helping you with your day. Enchanting something doesn’t have to be necessarily draining, but it does get easier with time if it does start out that way, as again it’s all about just the intent. An easy way to enchant, perhaps a glass of water for example, on low-energy days is to hold the glass in your hands, and really try to connect with it, with its energy. Try to feel the energy it gives; is it healing? Is it calming? What do you feel, objectively and subjectively, when you have the glass in your hands? Maybe dip a finger or two into the glass to really connect with the element physically. Now, visualize the positive energy you wish to receive from the water streaming into it from source, giving it a boost of power to then give to you when you drink from the glass.
What is worry water?
Worry water is what it sounds like; it’s water with worries. Just kidding, it’s the water you put your worries into. It’s a ritualized water healing technique that can be done anytime anywhere you need to let out the steam building inside of you. This is a healthy way to let emotions out, instead of bottling up and spilling over eventually. Water can hold the energies you give it, so don’t worry about being ‘too much,’ let it all go.
- First, grab a bowl or glass, whichever is easiest, and fill it as much as you’d like with water. You won’t be drinking this water, so any water is fine.
- Next, connect with the element of water if you can by meditating or grounding for a few moments, even a few minutes if you can.
- When you feel focused, bring your attention to where you feel pain, both emotionally and physically. What was happened recently that wasn’t that great? What troubles you? Everything and anything. To start for your first time doing this ritual, bring the pains of more recent troubles that are easier for the water to wash away.
- Now talk to the water as it is; a friend there to listen. It won’t think you’re annoying, so go ahead and let it all out. Scream and cry if you need to, but let it all out what troubles you. Whatever releases the building bubbles inside you, say the words.
- When finished, thank the water elementals for listening, and go ahead and pour the water out. Down the drain is fine, just don’t water your plants with this water since it will now contain heavy negative emotions within.
- Tips: you don’t need to necessarily cleanse and create a circle here (if you do so in your tradition), but afterwards it would be a good time to cleanse, whether with washing your hands ritually (imagining all excess and clinging negative energies to leave down the drain) or even finding the energy to take a bath or shower. It’s normal to be drained after working with Worry Water, so don’t fret if maybe you’ll even need a nap or to sleep. After cleansing, go back to grounding and meditating so you stay in the present, and fully realize the absence of the emotions you let into the waters.
- Another Tip: Why not try doing this in the shower or bath when you can? That way, simultaneously, you’re cleansing yourself, but you’re also letting the worries down the drain at the same time. It’s an excellent way to double-whammy purify the negative energies that cloud you.
I would say you could use the element of Fire or Earth, too, and you can, absolutely, but it’s a bit harder if you’re bed/indoors bound for the most part or don’t have access to candles. That, and earth as an energetic spell force is slow, it seems. It builds slowly, so it would be good for long term spells for the times you’re willing to plant those seeds. Fire is rapid, and can work as fast if not faster than air, but the need to carry on fire-safety is of utmost importance, and so on low-energy and low-mental health days, I’d honestly recommend against it. But for fire, electric candles absolutely work fine as an option, if you don’t want to risk fire hazards; the important thing is enchantment with intent and your will. Heck, with colored electric candles you can further add ‘boosts’ to the magick with color correspondences. So, if you’re able, light away a candle, electric or not, (as long as you can practice fire safety, you better pinky promise!). With fire so rapid, all you need to do is similar to what you do with water. You whisper aloud or in your head, but talk to the flame and give it your intent, your will, your desire. Visualize the flame taking this stream of consciousness and sending back out a lightly aura that is pushing your intent into the world.
To use the element of earth, there is always grounding without going outside, too, to plant the seeds for long term healing, one practice I love to do is grounding with visualization. I give myself a space to lie down, and close my eyes. I then visualize roots growing from me, seeking and going through every layer of a building until they reach the earth below. I then connect myself to the earth this way, seeking a healing, grounding, energetic exchange. I grow my leaves in my mind’s eye, giving myself the time to actually rest as plants do to grow. Every time you seek this space, imagine yourself drinking from the earth her healing nutrients, that she is healing you through your roots. We are all connected to the earth and in her arms. This may take slow, continuous effort to see results; but with the help of guided grounding/meditation practice, you can do this daily.

Guided Meditations and Visualizations
One thing I definitely use a lot in my practice is videos and audios online to listen to guided meditations or nature sounds, like gentle streams or of a great ocean or even forest scenes. I myself like the nature focused guided meditations, but there’s many other topics and scenarios as well. Here’s a few examples I like to use in my practice, varying by length:
- One such nature guided meditation is by @MindfulPeace on Youtube, called “Guided Forest Walk Meditation – Calming and Relaxing Mindfulness Activity” The Author speaks slower, and the ambience is nice, and the video is 20 minutes long.
- If you’d like a shorter one, a quick ~5 minute video by @5MinutesonGreatMeditation on YouTube called “A 5 minute Guided Grounding Meditation: Discovering Your Inner Sanctuary” . Her voice is nice, and talks at a slower pace as well. The ambience is lovely and I love the imagry she gives.
- If you’re okay with a much longer one, there’s a really lovely guided meditation by James Cole on YouTube called “The Magical Forest – Guided Meditation Visualization for Deep Relaxation & De-stressing” that’s 41 minutes long. It’s truly an experience, and deeply relaxing.
I mention meditation because it helps to ground and bring you back to your center in the present moment, which is helpful for healing, reducing stress and promoting calmness, and furthering your witchcraft abilities.
If brain fog is a problem, or you have trouble listening to directions aloud, you can also just use white noise such as rain or ocean sounds and wind blowing to use while meditating, or while using the techniques listed above. One other thing to use sound frequencies to get into a meditation state. On YouTube there’s multiple videos of these types of sounds going ‘live’ at any given moment because they’re so popular. A few examples to look up is:
- 174 Hz for relieving pain and stress, might help heal sick auras.
- 396 Hz for balancing the root chakra and releasing fear and guilt.
- 417 Hz to help move change, removing negative energy as well; the sacral chakra.
- 432 Hz to reduce stress and anxiety; the heart chakra.
- 528 Hz for creativity and transformation.
- 639 Hz, to connect with your relationships better, and helps heal the heart chakra.
These all can be used while meditating, or while doing things to take care of yourself. A popular YouTube channel with sound frequency videos of varying lengths (mostly hours long or live) is called @MeditationandHealing.
Conclusion
Thank you for reading this far, my dear, and I hope all these tips for this first part of low-energy witchcraft helps you to continue your journey in witchery despite the cards played to us. It’s alright if you can’t do ‘much’ sometimes. It’s easy to be hard on ourselves, especially when it comes to doing things we love, like our craft, when we can compare so easily to others online… but we need to allow ourselves the room to breathe the air we rightly deserve. You are not a burden, and at the end of the day, your craft will always be there for you, no matter what. So go ahead and face the sunshine, and all darkness will fall behind you.
